why do we practice? i understand for sports. you need to prepare for a competition. and i understand for performance. you need to prepare your performance. but why do we do technical exercises that we will not perform? why do musicians learn scales? whatever technique they are going to need for the pieces they will perform they can just learn them when they confront the piece?

against artificial rules

worst rules in football

holding (offensive)
illegal motion

above are there because of an established convention. changing them would just change the convention. could be a matter of taste. but enforcement is a problem. why bother

illegal man downfield is the dumbest. its like saying that you must have 5 guys on the field who can do nothing. "wll they have to block" but you could just eliminate 5 players on the defense too. why not add 10 more players who can't do anything?

pass interference is an artificial rule but a good one becuase of injury

intentional grounding is totally artificial.

paying your fair share of taxes

suppose you set tax rates based on what is "fair." and then you discover that a small fraction of people have a way of avoiding paying their fare share by say hiding income. then in order to make sure they pay their fair share you raise the tax rates.

(even if you don't do it in this order, there are always hidden sources of income and you will account for that when setting tax rates)

others are now paying more than their fair share. is it now fair for them to hide their income?
